Most of the characters do get their own backstories but none are particularly fleshed out.
The MC is good natured, but not overly so. He does very much prefer to kick ass and ask questions later. More in Asta's and Luffy's school of thought, rather than Naruto's.
Villains are mysterious. Their motivations take a while to come into light, but after season 1, it's still a bit early to say how ridiculous those are. They do seem a bit too crazy, but we'll have to see.

Fire Force is an enjoyable shounen. Not much things to surprise a veteran fan of the genre, but the fundamentals are good and plenty of fun to be had.
