Rarely, sisters with the same name, such as "Miku", may be differentiated by calling one "Miku-chan" and the other "Miku-san" or "-sama", and on some occasions,"-kun". Chan and -kun occasionally mean similar things. The general use of -kun for females implies respectful endearment and that the person being referred to is sweet and kind. In the National Diet (Legislature), the Speaker of the House uses -kun when addressing Diet members and ministers. An exception was when Takako Doi was the Speaker of the lower house, where she used the title -san. Chan[edit] Badges for sale bearing names suffixed with -chan Tan Chan (ちゃん) expresses that the speaker finds a person endearing. In general, -chan is used for young children, close friends, babies, grandparents and sometimes female adolescents. It may also be used towards cute animals, lovers, or youthful women. Chan is never used for strangers or people one has just met. Although traditionally, honorifics are not applied to oneself, some people adopt the childlike affectation of referring to themselves in the third person using -chan (childlike because it suggests that one has not learned to distinguish between names used for oneself and names used by others). For example, a young girl named Kanako might call herself Kanako-chan rather than the first-person pronoun. The second fight is a boxing match between Adam from the Old Testament and Zeus! Zeus hulks out and then decides to use Za Warudo for. some reason. However, Adam catches him with the cross counter from Ashita no Joe while wearing a brass knuckle made from the soul of a valkyrie. Everyone thinks Zeus is dead, but then he pops back up and says "This isn't even my final form!" Then he grows weird facial hair so he looks like Dr Eggman/Robotnik for absolutely no reason. That's the kind of anime we're dealing with.
The sad part is that despite how unbelievably stupid this anime is, it would have a Godlike MAL rating if the manga readers got their wish and it had been adapted by Madhouse or Ufotable. If everything was the same and it looked just slightly better, the series would get positive ratings and then the same whiners in the Gogoanime comments saying "This is so stupid! Why is Adam boxing Zeus?!" would either mysteriously shut up or start defending the show as secretly brilliant. After all, if a show has good ratings then it MUST be good right? I will fully admit that the CGI doesn't look that great and can look really janky at times. However, to an animation purist like me who hates CGI anime anyways, this doesn't look THAT much worse than Beastars or Houseki no Kuni to me.
In this world, alchemy is one of the most-practiced sciences; alchemists who work for the government are known as State Alchemists (国家錬金術師, Kokka Renkinjutsushi) and are automatically given the rank of major in the military. Alchemists have the ability, with the help of patterns called transmutation circles, to create almost anything they desire. However, when they do so, they must provide something of equal value in accordance with the Law of Equivalent Exchange. The only things alchemists are forbidden from transmuting are humans and gold. There has never been a successful human transmutation; those who attempt it lose a part of their body, and the result is an inhuman mass. Attemptees are confronted by Truth (真理, Shinri), a pantheistic and semi-cerebral God-like being who tauntingly regulates all alchemy use, and whose nigh-featureless appearance is relative to the person with whom Truth converses; it is frequently claimed and believed that Truth is a personal God who punishes the arrogant. Attemptees of human transmutation are also thrown into the Gate of Truth (真理の扉, Shinri no Tobira), where they receive an overwhelming dose of information, but also allowing them to transmute without a circle. All living things possess their own Gate of Truth, and per the Gaea hypothesis, heavenly bodies like planets also have their own Gates of Truth. It is possible to bypass the Law of Equivalent Exchange using a Philosopher's Stone, a red, enigmatic substance. Philosopher's Stones are used to create Homunculi, artificial humans of proud nature who are named after and embody the seven deadly sins; Homunculi have numerous superhuman abilities unique among each other, and look down upon all humanity. With the exception of one, they do not age and can only be killed via the destruction of their Philosopher's Stones.
