This History of SNK is an attempt to change all of that. The following sections document the entire 25-year history of the company--from it's founding in 1978, to the golden era of the early 1990s, through the unfortunate bankruptcy in 2001, and up to the present day. The author would like to give credit to Andrew Alfonso, Chad Okada, Ben Herman, Shawn McCleskey, Kenny Perry Jr. ,
Stuart Reynolds, Michael Shaver, and SnairDogg for their help with and input in this article, as well as to the fans of SNK and the NeoGeo all over the world who continue to show their undying love for the company's systems and games. Without these fine people, the story of SNK could not have been told. The Beginning (1978-1989) Ozma Wars was SNK's first game in 1979. Before all of the name changes, before the NeoGeo, and
long before the company became known for its King of Fighters and Metal Slug games, SNK was just another startup trying to gain a foothold in the burgeoning video game craze of the early 1980s. SNK (short for Shin Nihon Kikaku, or "New Japanese Project") Electronics Corp. , the brainchild of Eikichi Kawasaki, set up shop in Osaka, Japan, in July 1978. Initially, the company's purpose was to design and produce software and hardware components for a variety of business clients. Shortly thereafter, noticing the rapid growth that was occurring in the coin-operated video game sector, Kawasaki expanded the company's endeavors to include the development and marketing of stand-alone coin-operated games.
[41] Stage play[edit] A stage play adaptation of Kemono Friends with an original storyline ran at the
Shinagawa Prince Hotel Club eX in Tokyo from 2017 June 14 to 18. Hiroki Murakami directed the play and penned the script while some of the characters were portrayed by the same actors who voiced them in the anime series. [42] It ran again in 2018 from January 13 to 21. Reception[edit] Anime[edit] Season one[edit] The show's CGI animation initially received criticism for its quality and style. One critic[who?] expressed dissatisfaction on Twitter, stating that he stopped watching the show partway through the first episode. However, the show's popularity grew significantly after the fourth episode. [43] Critical bloggers have considered the show simplistic and repetitive. [44][45] Despite the low production quality, the anime series was
praised by some critics and viewers in Japan for its storyline and characters, becoming a cultural phenomenon in the country. [46] Nick Creamer of Anime News Network gave the series an overall grade of B, praising the worldbuilding and criticizing the visual aspects. [47] The first episode of Kemono Friends received a high number of views on NicoNico Douga. The show surpassed 1 million views by February 5, 5 million views by April 4, and eventually reached a record-breaking 10 million views by August 24.
