Some of Murky Dismal's expressions wouldn't look out of place in an anime, either. The show is essentially a Magical Girl cartoon as well, and was even translated as Mahou Shoujo Rainbow Brite in Japan. Ready Jet Go!: The characters' huge, shiny eyes and spiky hair on some of them could bring anime to mind. Also, the comic-book style transitions and montages resemble anime. Notable that Craig Bartlett is a fan of Hayao Miyazaki. The Real Ghostbusters. The characters practically switch styles depending on whether or not they're shaded. Then you have things like Stay Puft's anime expressions in the opening, and a Face Fault during the old promo. The characters on Santiago of the Seas have large, shiny eyes, expressive mannerisms, and go through transformation sequences that wouldn't be out of place in a Magical Girl show. In fact, Niki Lopez has stated that the show's visuals were inspired by Sailor Moon and the works of Rumiko Takahashi (Urusei Yatsura, Inuyasha, Ranma 1⁄2, etc). She-Ra and the Princesses of Power is what would happen if you rebooted the classic She-Ra show using an anime format.

The rest of the series involves Fena learning the ropes of being at sea as a fledgling member of the Seven Samurai as they set sail in search of the answer to her mysterious pirate heritage. Fena recaptured that late Saturday night magic from my childhood, which was helped in part by the show being a part of Toonami’s lineup thanks to Adult Swim’s partnership with anime streaming service Crunchyroll. Though the show had plenty of comedic and wholesome moments as Fena explored the seas with her crew, the action was surprisingly bloody and brutal. When I looked into why, I discovered that Kazuto Nakazawa, the director and key animator for Fena, also worked on Hunter x Hunter, Samurai Champloo, and the anime sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. Watching Fena weekly felt like catching up with a member of your found family thanks to the palpable chemistry from the anime’s English voice cast. Sidebar: I think it’s neat that when the cast members met in person they discovered a many of them are nonbinary.

Bebop was a trend-setting marriage of anime traditions and Tarantino-inspired cultural hodgepodge — it could be said that Pulp Fiction influenced Cowboy Bebop as much as Cowboy Bebop influenced Kill Bill — and Samurai Champloo continues in this meta style, taking it even further.
Of course, Cowboy Bebop was not Shinichiro Watanabe's first foray into resonant crossover in anime: Macross Plus was a monolithic amalgamation of Top Gun's hot-headed romantic drama and sci-fi tropes including a pop-idol hologram version of 2001: A Space Odyssey's HAL, in turn influencing the famous cyberpunk writer William Gibson to write Idoru, a novel about a Japanese virtual idol and her marriage to a real-life rock star. Of course, all of this was before the invention of the Vocaloid, though I suppose the future imagined by Watanabe and Gibson was, in a way, not so far off.
Anyhow, now that I've finished my little history lesson — which I feel is relevant, as having such a perspective may deepen your enjoyment of Samurai Champloo as much as it did for me — let's continue on to the review.
Wonderlands x Showtime: Tsukasa Tenma has always wanted to make his sickly sister, Saki, happy, but as time passed, he couldn't remember why he wanted to be a star in the first place. He was hired to work part-time at the theme park Phoenix Wonderland, but the once-popular theater Wonder Stage he is assigned to has been deserted, unable to attract any visitors for years. There, he met Emu Otori, who desires to restore the theater to its former glory. Joined by Nene Kusanagi and Rui Kamishiro, they formed a musical theater troupe as they entered the Wonderland SEKAI and met a clown-like Miku, hoping to revive the theater's glory and make people happy. Nightcord at 25:00: Kanade Yoisaki has been homeschooled and becomes reclusive because of a trauma she sustained as a result of an incident in the past. She formed an underground music circle with her three online acquaintances Mafuyu Asahina, Ena Shinonome, and Mizuki Akiyama, communicating over a voice-chat platform named "Nightcord" and meeting at 25:00 (1AM). None of them knew each other's true names or identities, only knowing each other by online aliases and through voice chat. Kanade was pulled into the Empty SEKAI by Miku, who urged her to help save Mafuyu, the group's lyricist who had mysteriously disappeared a week prior. Characters[edit] This section needs expansion. You can help by adding to it. (October 2023) The characters are divided into five groups of four, each with a theme related to the groups' backstory, complete with Hatsune Miku in a thematic design to sing alongside them, and start with one other Virtual Singer (with the exception of Vivid BAD SQUAD, who have Len and MEIKO, and Nightcord at 25:00, who only have Miku herself).
