Kayaba appears and tells the players that they must beat all 100 floors of Aincrad, a steel castle which is the setting of SAO, if they wish to be free. As he goes to the hospital to see Asuna, he meets Asuna's father Shouzou Yuuki who is asked by an associate of his, Nobuyuki Sugou, to make a decision, which Sugou later reveals to be his marriage with Asuna, angering Kazuto. Several months later, he is informed by Agil, another SAO survivor, that a figure similar to Asuna was spotted on "The World Tree" in another VRMMORPG cyberspace called Alfheim Online (ALO). Assisted in-game by his cousin and adoptive sister Suguha "Leafa" Kirigaya and Yui, a navigation pixie (originally an AI from SAO), he quickly learns that the trapped players in ALO are part of a plan conceived by Sugou to perform illegal experiments on their minds. The goal is to create the perfect mind-control for financial gain and to subjugate Asuna, whom he intends to marry in the real world, to assume control of her family's corporation.

But what really bothers me about it is the complete and utter lack of any and all thematic depth or substance. Usually even in shounen there's some solid idea behind everything, be it dreams, people you care about, being a hero, ect. With this anime, it's hard to care about anything that happens because there is none of that. No real virtues being stood up for, nothing gained from watching besides maybe epiliptic shock from the flashy visual effects. No philosophy. And at the end of the day, making a statement is what makes a piece of art. This anime really doesn't do that, it feels like it has nothing to say. It feels like a kid trying to copy his sucessful older brothers even though he has no life experience to draw from. And that's ultimately this anime's biggest failing. In short this anime is garbage, and not worth your time. It once again proves that Shounen Anime have no other goals than to appeal to the widest majority of their audience with hype culture pandering, quirks with no substance, genetically engineered pop-appeal, fake early-introduced emotional stakes, and standing up for basically no specific theme besides shallow virtue. There aren't even that many filler episodes, so you just have to sit through and endure, picking pieces of information, plot and character development throughout the whole series until you arrive at the key moments of each arc, the payout after all the buildup.
This series is only recommended for anyone who feels like enduring the challenge of sitting through it. If you're into . reading manga, I highly recommend reading it. The story, characters and the world are well written and the pacing is good, I'd say it only depends on your reading speed.
I'm editing this review in the future once I'm caught up with the damned thing and give it a proper rating score, because it's a piece of art in development so it's not fair to give it a rating this early into the show (800 eps in lol).
One of the reasons why I'm not making a full review now is its animation. It displays the history of the evolution of analogue TV and hand-drawn animation, to the current digital broadcasting and computer-generated animation. And I know that it's evolving even further, with the latest arcs showing off some gorgeous scenes that showcase masterful animation techniques.
