Outside Japan and in English, anime refers specifically to animation produced in Japan. [1] However, in Japan and Japanese, anime (a term derived from a shortening of the English word animation) describes all animated works, regardless of style or origin. Many works of animation with a similar style to Japanese animation are also produced outside Japan. Video games sometimes also feature themes and art styles that can be considered as "anime". The earliest commercial Japanese animation dates to 1917. A characteristic art style emerged in the 1960s with the works of cartoonist Osamu Tezuka and spread in following decades, developing a large domestic audience. Anime is distributed theatrically, through television broadcasts, directly to home media, and over the Internet.

Synopsis[modifier | modifier le code] Prisonnier à l'intérieur d'un iceberg pendant un siècle, Aang, maître de l'air d'une douzaine d'années, est libéré des glaces par deux jeunes membres de la tribu de l'eau du pôle Sud. Aang a une destinée hors du commun : il est l'Avatar, chargé de maintenir l'équilibre entre les maîtres des quatre éléments. Ceux-ci sont répartis en quatre civilisations : les tribus de l'eau, le royaume de la terre, la nation du feu et les nomades de l'air. Toutefois, sa tâche se
complique lorsqu'il découvre que la nation du feu a profité des cent ans passés pour semer la guerre et la destruction. Et ce, pour étendre son emprise sur les trois autres peuples. Aang est le seul à pouvoir rétablir l'ordre au sein de l'univers. Néanmoins, il doit commencer par apprendre à maîtriser les trois autres éléments. C'est le seul moyen d'atteindre son but. Il commencera par l'eau, ensuite la terre et enfin le feu.
