This has lead to immense vitriol from some fans who complain that it's "not real anime" or "just cartoons": Onyx Equinox is probably the least overt example. Character designs are generally similar to those in Avatar, but some designs more closely resemble anime, e. g. Quetzalcoatl's true form. High Guardian Spice is inspired by Magical Girl through and through. Blade Runner: Black Lotus is actually listed as an anime, but it was made in-house.

They're not great but they look better than CGI. The switching between the 2d and CGI scenes can be quite jarring at times.
The CGI is bad, but the real problem with the Kengan Ashura anime is the story. I've already talked at length about how good the story is in my review for the manga. It's a simple story but well thought out and executed. The anime somehow completely butchers it. The anime adapts 73 chapters from the manga, not counting the extra chapters. Obviously, a plethora of stuff was cut to make it fit into twelve episodes. Entire subplots and characters are just gone, it's a mess. For example, the anime just skips the second major fight of the series and jumps right to the third fight. I'm astounded that they would skip a fight, in a series all about fighting. During his second retirement, he would still wear weight straps on both his wrists and ankles and train while coaching his two students, showing improvement in both power and speed. During Ippo's spar against Volg, the latter noticed by looking at Ippo's muscles that even though Ippo is retired, he hasn't slacked on his training. [114] Aoki and Kimura thinks that his sense of distance and rhythm is better than when he was active before, his knowledge of holding the mitts could make him handle counters better, and his manoeuvring could be better as well. [115] In order to help Mashiba fight against world champion Rosario, Ippo trained as a southpaw to copy Rosario's style by using his left hand to do everyday activities, shadowboxing while making his right leg his pivot, and weaving under metal bars while throwing punches. Then, to create a simulation of Mashiba vs. Rosario, he inserts a long log into the hillside near a sign to represent Mashiba's Flicker Jab and right uppercut, and a small peg in the ground as Mashiba's left pivot leg, weaving side-to-side under the log while throwing lefts, then lends a high and low left combination on the sign.
