The film was released theatrically in Japan in July 1988, and followed by limited theatrical
releases in various Western territories
from 1989 to 1991. [23][24] Even when Young Magazine became a weekly publication in 1989, Otomo and Akira retained a biweekly schedule. [17] The 120 chapters and more than 2,000 pages were collected and released in six tankōbon volumes by publisher Kodansha
between September 21, 1984, and March 23, 1993. [17] A five-volume anime comic version created using scenes from the film adaptation was published between August 29 and December 6, 1988, with newly painted covers by Otomo. [17] The colored version created for America by Marvel Comics was published in Japan in 12 volumes between October 7, 1988,[17] and September 20, 1996. English publication[edit] Otomo and Kodansha's Yasumasa Shimizu visited New York City in 1983 to meet with Archie Goodwin of Marvel Comics, who had seen Akira and wanted to publish it in America. [25] Shimizu said that Kodansha had received offers from many other publishers, including the newly established Viz Media, but Otomo chose Goodwin because he was really close to French artists that Otomo was a fan of. [25] Otomo did not want Akira to be seen as some "strange thing from Japan," leading to a meticulous and now-"unimaginable" process of altering the art and coloring to make it accessible to American audiences. [25] Because Japanese manga is read right-to-left, the artwork had to be flipped to read the other way. But the process was not as simple as mirroring, backgrounds had to be redone in order to remove the Japanese sound effects and reshape the word balloons to fit the Roman alphabet. [17] So Otomo went in and made substantial retouches and adjustments that are specific to the American version.
At the beginning of the series, Nami despised all pirates. She viewed them as nothing but bad people after losing someone close to her,
only changing her mind after she met Luffy. Before her view changed on pirates, she was perfectly fine with giving Luffy up captive to Buggy, as she could not bring herself to stoop to their level. She also dismissed the Devil Fruits as myths until she saw Buggy's Bara Bara no Mi in action. Nami's years of thievery have given her a sly and wily personality, as she isn't above taking advantage of or blackmailing her own crew mates. While having these greedy personality traits, she is still very loyal to the crew, though they do get on her nerves from time to time (often resulting in her lashing out at them). Like Usopp, Nami is a coward when she is afraid to takes on very powerful enemies (such as Admirals or Emperors) due to her physical prowess to be weak. Although she will never betray those who are close to her, Nami is afraid to be tortured when Opera was going to use a bowgun to interrogate her of Lola's whereabouts. Nami doesn't take betrayal very kindly as it demonstrated when she decided to discard Zeus for his attempted to kill her due to Big Mom though she forgives him for his previously betrayal due to Big Mom having no use for Zeus after creating Hera. She beats York into a pulp with her staff for her betrayal and delusions of grandeur to become a Celestial Dragon as well doesn't care if the deluded York complains that the Five Elders will destroy Egghead just like Ohara only to full Nami's rage by beating York for her insolence towards Robin's home island. Her dream is to draw a map of the world, which she was
unable to realize until Luffy managed to free her and her island from the tyrannical rule of the Fish-man pirate Arlong.
