04. Synopsis[edit] Setting[edit] Hunters (ハンター, Hantā) are licensed, elite members of humanity who are capable of tracking down secret treasures, rare beasts, or even other individuals, and can also access locations that regulars cannot. [5] To obtain a license one must pass the rigorous annual Hunter Examination run by the Hunter Association, which has a success rate of less than one in a hundred-thousand. [6] A Hunter may be awarded up to three stars: a single star for making "remarkable achievements in a particular field"; they may then be upgraded to two stars for "holding an official position" and mentoring another Hunter up to single star level; and finally upgraded to three stars for "remarkable achievements in multiple fields". [7] Nen (念) is the ability to control one's own life energy or aura, which is constantly emitted from them, knowingly or not. There are four basic Nen techniques: Ten (纏) maintains the aura in the body, strengthening it for defense; Zetsu (絕) shuts the aura flow off, useful for concealing one's presence and relieving fatigue; Ren (練) enables a user to produce more Nen; and Hatsu (發) is a person's specific use of Nen. [8] Nen users are classified into six types based on their Hatsu abilities; Enhancers (強化系, Kyōkakei) strengthen and reinforce their natural physical abilities; Emitters (放出系, Hōshutsukei) project aura out of their bodies; Manipulators (操作系, Sōsakei) control objects or living things; Transmuters (変化系, Henkakei) change the type or properties of their aura; Conjurers (具現化系, Gugenkakei) create objects out of their aura; and Specialists (特質系, Tokushitsukei) have unique abilities that do not fall into the previous categories. [9] A Nen user can enter into a Contract (誓約, Seiyaku) where, by pledging to follow certain Limitations (制約, Seiyaku), their abilities are strengthened in relation to how strict they are. An example of this is Kurapika who, in order to have an unbreakable chain that will fully restrain members of the Phantom Troupe, offered his life, should he use it on anyone other than its members. [10] Plot[edit] Main article: List of Hunter × Hunter characters The story follows a young boy named Gon Freecss, who was told all his life that both his parents were dead. But when he learns from Kite, an apprentice of his father Ging Freecss, that he is still alive and has since become an accomplished Hunter, Gon leaves his home on Whale Island (くじら島, Kujira Tō) to take the Hunter Examination (ハンター試験, Hantā Shiken) in order to become a Hunter like him.

When one Elder asked what prompted this question, Cobra revealed that a short letter had been passed down from generation to generation by Lili. Outside in the public courtyard, Saint Charlos made his move on Shirahoshi, having Kuma tie her up in chains. Charlos started dancing over his "accomplishment" and gushed over the idea of riding her everywhere and harming her if she defied him. She started begging for someone to save her, but the bystanders were too scared to interfere and all ran away pretending they had not seen a thing. Her brother Fukaboshi rushed to save her, apologizing for looking away earlier, which had allowed Charlos to seize her. His brothers Ryuboshi and Manboshi joined him, but Charlos simply told Kuma to blast them as he proclaimed that he could buy permission to do whatever he wanted, especially against Fish-Men and Merfolk. Rebecca and Leo saw Shirahoshi being assaulted, and Sai asked Saint Donquixote Mjosgard if he could hit Charlos, to which Mjosgard said Sai could and he would take responsibility for it. Mjosgard told Fukaboshi to restrain himself since he was of royal blood, but for Leo and Sai, since the two were pirates, Mjosagard thought it was easier for them to escape since they were bound to no country. Charlos tried to blast Mjosgard for hitting him earlier, but Leo and Sai attacked Charlos simultaneously and practically flattened him with their attacks. All the nearby people started panicking over the possibility that Charlos was dead and that the Admirals would be summoned. As Kuma was about to fire another blast at Sai and Leo, Morley suddenly appeared from the ground and subdued Kuma, begging that they go home together. A miniseries titled Death Note: New Generation and a fourth film were released in 2016. An American film adaptation was released exclusively on Netflix in August 2017, and a series is reportedly in the works. Death Note media, except for video games and soundtracks, is licensed and released in North America by Viz Media. The episodes from the anime first appeared in North America as downloadable from IGN before Viz Media licensed it. The series was aired on YTV's Bionix programming block in Canada and on Adult Swim in the United States with a DVD release following. The live-action films briefly played in certain North American theaters, in 2008, before receiving home video releases.
[35] Toei and Geneon briefly teamed up to release the anime on DVD in North America after the manga was discontinued, though this was also discontinued after only a few volumes. [36][37] The first DVD was released on March 15, 2005, and volume 4 was the last one released on June 14, 2005, before they were cancelled. [38][39] Various episodes from the series were also downloadable in IGN's Direct2Drive service. [40] Toei is currently streaming episodes of the series online for a fee and for free through Crunchyroll. Joost also started airing all 101 episodes as of May 2009 on their website. [41][42] The music was composed by Takanobu Masuda (from episode 1 to 61) and BMF (from episode 62 to 101). Three CD soundtracks were published during the airing of the series in Japan. [43][44] The openings, ending and other two themes were collected into the CD soundtrack The Best of TV Animation Slam Dunk, released on July 21, 2003. [45] Anime films[edit] Main article: The First Slam Dunk Four anime films were produced by Toei Animation from 1994 to 1995 while the manga and TV series were still running. They contain largely new material that is either only hinted at or is not presented in the manga. From August 1 to 4, 2006, NHK broadcast all four movies as part of its satellite networks NHK BS-2's Summer Anime Choice line-up, and TV Osaka aired the last three movies from January 3 to 8, 2007.
