The “Rule of Cool” is fine for an occasional indulgence, but to make it a part of the show’s framework is a dangerous game. Cid Kagenou is *The Eminence in Shadow’s* attempt to make the “Rule of Cool” personified via the main protagonist.
Yet in all that
time focusing on him, most of the ensemble gets left out in the lurch. The “Greek chorus,” or the series of women who serve under Cid in Shadow Garden, are the prime example. They are caricatures rather than characters, a harem in principle and occasional sexual connotation, though not with Cid himself. No chance is given to develop many of them into substantial beings—they don’t
even get names beyond Greek letter designations, hence why I referred to them as “Greek chorus” before—because the show’s structure deemphasizes their own relevance. Throughout most of the story, they appear for brief
moments and then vanish for long stretches of time, and their contributions to Cid’s shadowy operations do little more than deliver messages or background information. There’s a bizarre fixation on several of them being either competitive, protective, or envious of other members’ breasts. Even when they fight, the moments themselves do barely enough to give the women a sense of dimension. It took nearly one dozen episodes of their sporadic appearance before I finally learned who was named what.
The more-prominent side characters of each arc do not fare much better.
One day, while he was being beaten by Sykes Charluke and his goons because one of his family mansions got burned down, he was rescued by Leonica who invited him to hunt Dragons due to her seeing a hidden
strength in him for always surviving tragedies and because him attracting Dragons could help in hunting. While Ragna tried to warn her Leonica simply explained to him that only those who are stronger than Dragons can survive and that she would prove that to him. In the
following years the pair would hunt Dragons. Well, technically, Leonica was the one mainly hunting whereas Ragna took care of everything outside the hunting. While Ragna believed he would never reach Leonica's level of power that never stopped him from training in secret so he could stay with her as long as possible, at least until the day he himself would be killed by a Dragon. [1] Plot[] Main timeline[] Fall of Lese Arc[] One day, while hunting, Ragna daydreamed someone killing instantly countless dragons of many sizes, but this got him distracted and almost killed by a dragon if it wasn't for Leonica's intervention. They returned to the hunter guild in Ronabera, one of the seven cities of the Kingdom of Lese, to redeem the bounty. At the guild's tavern Ragna gets harassed by Sykes and his goons because of his weakness but Leonica intervened by drawing out her silver sword. Leo questioned Sykes what he sought with his sword, she explained she sought only strength and that was the reason she hunted dragon, because they are the strongest creatures she could fight. Then she invited anyone to follow her on her journey dedicated to onloy hunt dragons, she would share with them wealth, fame and glory, but no one showed interest except Ragna. Afterwards they went to sleep.
