Mob at a young age is told that psychic powers are the same as having any other talent or skill, like being good at math or sports. This is refreshing as a lot of main characters are constantly being told that they're special in some way, good or bad, because of their powers. Another refreshing part of the story is that kids actually ask adults for help, and the adults help them. It may sound stupid, but think of how many shows have a plot line where the adults: A. don't understand, B. aren't told anything, or C. refuse to help for no reason. Probably a lot, right? Mob Psycho has actual RESPONSIBLE adults in it. Revolutionary. Nami and Camie escape to the Sea Forest, where they meet Jimbei, a fish-man pirate who formerly served as a World Government Warlord and released Arlong into the East Blue. Nami comforts Jimbei after he tells the history of discrimination rooted into Fish-Man Island and expresses his guilt over Arlong. At Jimbei's request, Nami steals a letter in Hody's possession, and engages with the New Fish-Man Pirates. When the crew travels to Punk Hazard, Nami, Sanji, Chopper, and the crew's shipwright Franky are abducted by Caesar Clown, and they decide to rescue the children being used in Caesar's experiments. Upon escaping the laboratory, they encounter the World Government Warlord Trafalgar Law, whose ability swaps Nami's mind into Franky's body. When Luffy and Law form an alliance, Law swaps Nami's mind into Sanji's body (as Nami's body is not present) when attempting to return the crew members to normal. While rescuing the children from Caesar, Nami regroups with the crew and is returned to her own body. She later prevents Caesar's escape with Usopp's help, and she entrusts the children with the Marine Tashigi. In Dressrosa, Nami stays on the Thousand Sunny with Chopper and the crew's musician Brook to guard Caesar and the ship. They are attacked by Giolla of the Donquixote Pirates and turned into abstract art, but Brook defeats Giolla and returns them to normal. Due to the Big Mom Pirates also targeting Caesar, Nami and half of the crew are forced to head to Zou to avoid creating more problems for the Dressrosa mission. The other character that gets the most screentime is probably the noble family daughter, which the show uncomfortably sets up as a romantic interest for Ryouma. They do try to justify this by saying that Ryouma’s mind is degenerating back to that of an eleven-year-old, which is pretty damn terrifying if you think about it. All the girl does though is fawn over Ryouma and talk about how she wants to “do her best” like any generic anime girl. I felt no connection to her or her relationship with the main character.
As for Ryouma himself, there wasn’t much hope for his personality. Being your average isekai protagonist means he can’t manage anything beyond generically “nice” or passive, lest the audience loses the ability to self-insert themselves into him for even a second. There’s some stuff about how he’s dealing with the traumatic experience of his previous life, but it’s only ever briefly mentioned and never gets explored as much as I wanted. Every so often it’d cut back to scenes of Ryouma’s previous life to show how it sucked compared his new one, and I’d actually get a bit more invested. I’d have liked if the show jumped back and forth between his two lives more often, but instead we had to watch him scrub a sewer or walk around some mines or something. It reminded me of Youjo Senki – where I was all on board for the theological pissing match between a cynical salaryman and “God”, but the show kept interrupting that with the forgettable magic WW1. 5 stuff.
