Shinsetsu Samurai Spirits Bushidouretsuden (1996, NeoGeo CD)Also appearing on: PlayStation (1997), Saturn (1997)
As you can tell from the title, Samurai Shodown RPG appeared only in Japan. Players controlled a party of three familiar Samurai Shodown characters and guided them from town to town on the way to final confrontations with Amakusa and Mizuki--who, as demonic bad people, were trying to conquer the world. You could forge weapons and buy items in towns, which came in handy during the random battles that occurred out on the plains and in the dungeons where most of the action actually took place. Instead of magic, the characters could perform special attacks based on their Samurai Shodown fighting abilities. Ukyo had his apple toss and slice, Charlotte had her power gradation, and so on. The graphics were OK compared to other RPGs of the era, but the big draw was the fight animations, which were inspired by the moves found in the normal Samurai Shodown fighting games. Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (1997, NeoGeo)
Also appearing on: Saturn (1997)
Yet another remix in the Fatal Fury series, RBFFS added more characters that were left out of the first Real Bout game and balanced the characters a little better. The King of Fighters '97 (1997, NeoGeo)
Also appearing on: PlayStation (1998), Saturn (1998)
The innovations that started with KOF '96 continued in the '97 edition. To begin with, you had the ability to choose between two modes: advanced and extra mode. While extra mode worked much like previous KOF games in that you built a meter to use one super combo, advanced mode let you collect "stocks" of super combos and gave you the ability to "break" them to unleash new, more devastating combos. Although there weren't nearly as many innovations in KOF '97 as there were in the '96 edition, the Orochi story arc continued, introducing two slightly new characters, Orochi Iori and Leona, as well as killing off Vice and Mature.
And he won’t rest until he’s done with each and every one of them. Everyone loves superheroes. They swoop out of the sky and save the day. This city’s in thrall to them: we buy their toys, watch their movies, read their fawning headlines. But if you knew just half of what supes get up to, you’d think again. That’s where Butcher comes in. He’s here to spank those supes when they get out of line. And he won’t rest until he’s done with each and every one of them. Everyone loves superheroes. They swoop out of the sky and save the day. This city’s in thrall to them: we buy their toys, watch their movies, read their fawning headlines.
