Also backstories were completely thrown out the window for a lot of characters that deserved their interesting pasts and ideologies explained. The only backstory that was explained in depth was the Elric brothers', and they conveniently took a painfully slow, nine-episode-long flashback to do so. I did like how they gave Nina's story ample time, but she didn't really provide any material as far as character development later on. Also, they didn't need to (try to) bring her back.
Earth. That is literally the hook. So for the rest of the show, the frame, and the Reverse-Isekai portion, it attempts to be a comedy. But the comedy falls flat for me, as it only consists of "he is ugly", "he is socially inept", "magic is real" and "he lost touch with the preset" jokes.
That is so much wasted potential as the same premise can be used to create a political high-stakes drama around the concept of magic and the clarifications of god. Or it could've even learn more into the slice-of-life aspects of the main cast and how they abuse their magic uncle for their gains. But instead it goes for probably the worst lane. Telling a story where we know the ending from the get-go. Other aspects like the possibility of aching to return to the world where he spent 50% of his life and even more percentage of active conscious living are completely ignored and only show that there was very little thought put into the whole thing.
In the end Isekai Ojisan has a very stale humour and leans way to hard into the storybook aspects of its premise to result in an uninteresting generic fantasy blurp without special characters or action. Everything feels generic and only as if the writers where checking a list to box things off.
