[7][6] Additionally, Horikoshi noted that he likes Gamera and Godzilla franchises and made references to these kaiju media and mentioned about them in several comments. [9][10] Hitoshi Koike, the editor of My Hero Academia, said that Horikoshi already has a general story in mind for the manga. However, he also noted there were many rejected story ideas, and that Horikoshi dismissed some ideas himself. Koike also stated that Horikoshi liked to use his inspirations. [6] Koike also noted My Hero Academia's first three chapters took longer to complete than many other new serialized works. Koike and Horikoshi worked on concepts about the characters' designs while finishing the storyboards; Koike felt excited about the characters' designs despite not knowing their role in the plot. [6] Kengo Monji, the second editor of the manga, said Horikoshi had a difficult time writing chapters at first. Monji felt that mixing the flair of Japan's shōnen manga with "heroes", a concept that he felt was understandable to a wide audience. Monji also complimented Horikoshi's artwork, noting its cartoon-style. [6] Conclusion Horikoshi originally stated that My Hero Academia would not be as long as One Piece since he felt he did not have enough stamina; instead preferring to keep it concise in comparison to other shōnen manga series. [7] In April 2021, Horikoshi stated that the series had continued for longer than expected, but that it is still leading toward the ending that he had decided upon before the series began.

That means it gets a score that doesn't stand out. Characters: Our characters are pretty flat and don't develop. Motivations are straightforward but they are cute. Overall: I'm studying Japanese so turning off the subtitles makes the show worth watching for me on account that most often the speech is very simple. I can't praise the show too much though, nor can I criticize much more than the wonky camera angles. If you want some easy watching, go for this show.

It took nearly one dozen episodes of their sporadic appearance before I finally learned who was named what.
The more-prominent side characters of each arc do not fare much better. Sherry is reduced to little more than buttshot eye candy despite the great intelligence we are told that she has, all the while the show decides to relentlessly dump tragedy upon her. Rose has her character more or less centered on her adoration of, and personal history with, Cid and an involvement with cultist Perv Asshat (yes, that is his name in-universe). Annerose, introduced as a warrior of high caliber, becomes a complete no-show for the last few episodes. Each new arc introduces more and more characters who become little more than blips on the show’s radar, unintriguing toys for Cid to use for whatever fantasy kick he’s on at the moment. They are constantly janked around by forces they don’t understand, which does little to make them compelling players in the larger game.
But within the desert of characterization stand Alexia and Iris, sisters to their own Midgar throne, as the exceptions to the material’s obsession with Cid being detrimental to everyone else. Their early introduction plot-wise and the fixation both on their personal status and relationship to one another and the larger-scale circumstances more-cohesively set off their personal journeys. Both are perplexed by both the antagonistic forces in their world and Shadow Garden’s mysterious presence, unsure what to make of them. Alexia especially acknowledges her own lack of understanding of what is transpiring since she’s not privy to her sister’s circle of information among the knights or overall skill; she takes the first step into becoming more proactive in the grand scheme of *The Eminence in Shadow’s* shenanigans.
