And correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the chess analogy at the start of the show based on an illegal move? Despite it's flaws, It's still a pretty enjoyable time so long as you don't think too much about it. The logic behind characters' actions, or lack thereof, is just there to show off one common trope after the next. It just reuses older clichés done to death over the years, all culminating in a mediocre execution. Overall, while it isn't exactly a bad experience, I feel it's flaws are greatly overlooked. Sonny Boy evokes the feeling of an arthouse-style feature-length film along the lines of director Shingo Natsume’s previous work The Tatami Galaxy. Each episode, particularly after episode three, focuses on a different high schooler and the strife they faced in the real world and how it manifests elsewhere. Sonny Boy tells a complete and satisfying story, which makes it tragic that I almost didn’t get to watch it this year because it is my favorite anime to come out of 2021.
