"Tokyo Revengers" is the first anime I watched about gangs, so I don't know how reliable my opinion is at this level, since I don't have any comparison standards. Overall, I enjoyed the first season a lot: engaging plot, cool characters, good fight scenes, etc. , and it was very interesting to me, because I'd never seen animes regarding these themes, so it felt like a whole new thing for me, thus it made it very exciting. I like the base story a lot: the main character, Takemichi, has to travel back in time to save his ex-girlfriend from being killed by the Tokyo . Manji Gang, and ends up befriending the leaders and, eventually, joining the gang. He soon realizes that his girlfriend, Hinata, is just one of the many people he has to save, since the gang is nothing like it was in the past, having become a criminal cold-blooded organization. But without a hopeful ending, it’s more akin to watching a slow death play out than otherwise. Director Isao Takahata makes these opening scenes count. In such a short span of time, he places the audience in a position where emotional attachment with the main characters feel genuinely crafted. We’re instantly drawn to Setsuko’s abundant wonder and childlike innocence, and likewise support Seita as he must transform into the parental figure his sister will need. We realise how food scarcity and a general lack of resources impacts them both above all others. And naturally, we can only feel sorry for the two.
