[21] However, due to complaints from his editor, the protagonist was changed into a Viking. With this proposed setup, the author agreed as he wanted Thorfinn to understand the causes of tragedy by his being a Viking in later parts of the narrative. He wanted the protagonist to be affected by violence, often having poor luck. [22] Yukimura began serializing Vinland Saga in April 2005 in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine, where it ran until October 2005. After a two-month hiatus, it resumed serialization in late December 2005 in the seinen manga magazine Monthly Afternoon, also owned by Kodansha. This switch was caused by Yukimura, who found he could not keep up a long-term weekly production schedule. [23] He sometimes works 18 hours as one of his techniques requires a lot of time. He stated that he creates and submits one page each day to the publisher. He also states how tens of thousands of people wish to work creating manga and the competition results in high-quality manga. [24] When he first started drawing, Yukimura expected the series to take 10 years to finish, but later gave an estimate of 14 years. He had calculated that there would be 20 volumes, with each part consisting of four volumes, with five volumes each; this amount later increased to over 22 volumes.

Point being it's played only to signal a disturbance. And seeing that the show is all about disturbances, it just ends up exacerbating a problem that didn't need any more highlighting than it was already getting.
What needed more attention, however, were the characters and environment that the story took place in. For a show that's supposed to be genre defining, it does very little to prove it.
We get characters whose defining personality trait is being a loli with a speaking habit, I suppose. Beatrice and the rest of the loli cast could fuck off, I suppose. But I suppose since half of Re:Zero's main cast is lolis, getting rid of them would leave very little, I suppose. Stereotypical roles don't suddenly become better by simply switching them to another stereotypical role. A visual novel maid character doesn't gain depth by making her “waifu-bait” contestants. And this extends to every other character Suburu comes across on his journey. They're all just there to fill in expected roles, like a bunch of NPCs that are brought to life.
