Enter Fena: Pirate Princess. The anime follows Fena, a 16-year-old orphan who dreams of a better life than what awaits her in the brothel she’s begrudgingly called home in England. Luckily for her, pirates from her long-forgotten swashbuckling past have come to liberate her. The rest of the series involves Fena learning the ropes of being at sea as a fledgling member of the Seven Samurai as they set sail in search of the answer to her mysterious pirate heritage. Fena recaptured that late Saturday night magic from my childhood, which was helped in part by the show being a part of Toonami’s lineup thanks to Adult Swim’s partnership with anime streaming service Crunchyroll. Though the show had plenty of comedic and wholesome moments as Fena explored the seas with her crew, the action was surprisingly bloody and brutal. When I looked into why, I discovered that Kazuto Nakazawa, the director and key animator for Fena, also worked on Hunter x Hunter, Samurai Champloo, and the anime sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill. Watching Fena weekly felt like catching up with a member of your found family thanks to the palpable chemistry from the anime’s English voice cast. Sidebar: I think it’s neat that when the cast members met in person they discovered a many of them are nonbinary. You love to see it. X-Men was actually drawn by manga creator Kia Asamiya for a brief time in 2002. As well, the art of Joe Madureira, who drew the book from 1994 to 1997, is heavily manga-influenced. The Marvel Adventures version of Power Pack by Gurihiru. Like with most other Japanese artists hired to draw American comics, it is just as much an example of them matching our style even in pacing and storytelling. Ditto the art of Runaways. But looks less animesque as Art Evolution goes. Gurihiru's artwork on Superman Smashes the Klan. In particular, the villain's hair and facial expressions are blatant "Shōnen manga villain" during the climax, which is amusing given his white supremacist motivations. Ninja High School was drawn and written by Ben Dunn, an admitted anime and manga addict, and spoofs and/or parodies anything and everything in the genres that it can get away with in its early issues. Later, it settles down into an actual overarching plot, but the parody elements (as well as the art style) remain woven integrally in. Gold Digger, another Antarctic Press title by Fred Perry, has an art style heavily influenced by anime/manga, but the artist himself tends to keep the proportions within the art consistent and avoids the common visual gags for the most part.

By animation quality standards, Darling in the Frankxx maintains a consistent flow throughout the show. The first few episodes made it clear that there would be over the top action and it didn’t betray expectations. The producers were able to capture the highlights of battle scenes, emotional segments, and comedic moments flawlessly. Actual fighting scenes in the show is fast paced that makes an emotional impact. This is accomplished through the character expressions as it made many scenes feel larger than life. The mecha designed by Shigeto Koyama (Captain Earth, Eureka Seven) looks well-polished with the biotech features. Character designs shows the children well-dressed despite being isolated from society. On the other hand, the adults in the series looks ambiguously alien-alike. In addition, the klaxosaurs looks like they were inspired by kaiju movies. And of course, there’s fan service. It’s one of the main selling factors of the show to attract an audience.
