In 2005, Japanese television network TV Asahi
conducted a "Top 100" online web poll and nationwide survey: Captain Tsubasa placed 41st in the online poll and thirtieth in the survey. [93][94] In 2006, TV Asahi conducted another online poll for the top one hundred anime and Captain Tsubasa placed 16th on "The Celebrity List". [95] The third television series was also highly popular in 2002, earning high ratings. [96] Captain Tsubasa has inspired prominent footballers such as Hidetoshi Nakata, Alessandro Del Piero, Fernando Torres, Zinedine Zidane, Lionel Messi, Alexis Sánchez and Andrés Iniesta to play football and choose it as a career. [97][98][99][100][101][102] It also influenced Stephen Chow's film Shaolin Soccer (2001) and a line of Adidas running shoes. [103][104] Manga group Clamp have also produced dōjinshi works related with the Captain Tsubasa characters. [105] In 2004, when the JSDF provided humanitarian assistance in Samawah, Iraq, stickers of characters from the manga were posted on "twenty-six water wagons" which became known by the children. The news was reported as an example of how Japanese pop culture could have positive results for "cultural diplomacy and regional promotion. "[106] A bronze statue of Tsubasa Oozora was erected in the neighborhood of the anime's creator in Katsushika, Tokyo in spring 2013. [107] Tsubasa and Misaki appeared in the video for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics at the closing ceremony for the 2016 Summer Olympics. [108] Tsubasa and Misaki performed their twin shot in one scene and Tsubasa appeared on his own later with his
signature overhead kick.
The changes made in the game were quite evident. Gone were some of the more campy characters such as Earthquake and Tam-Tam, and in was a new system called slash/bust (or chivalry/treachery). The slash/bust system was a play on the code of the samurai and allowed you to use slightly different versions of your chosen fighter. Other minor additions to the gameplay included air blocking, sidestepping/dodging, and POW charge. Although the changes in the game were for the better, many people
felt that the series had fallen with Shodown III. Perhaps it was the change in theme or the absence of many fan favorites, but many gamers still feel this is one of the weaker installments in the series. Art of Fighting 3: The Path of a Warrior (1996, NeoGeo)
The final game in the Art of Fighting series had Robert Garcia as the star, shoving aside Ryo and his family problems. On the hunt for a woman named Freia, Robert traveled back to his homeland to answer some unsolved mysteries. It's easy to see why SNK ended the series here; just about all of the innovations that had been made were in the first game, and the last two installments did nothing to further the series. While the difficulty had been toned down significantly, there was nothing here aside from some new faces on the roster, namely Kasumi, Rody, Sinclair, Wang, and Jin. The King of Fighters '96 (1996, NeoGeo)
Also appearing on: PlayStation (1997), Saturn (1997)
If you ask any hardcore KOF fan which game was the best in the series, he or she will either say the '98 edition or this one.
