The Last Blade (1997, NeoGeo)
Also appearing on: PlayStation (1999)
Because of its late debut compared to Samurai Shodown, The Last Blade didn't receive nearly as much praise as it should have. Whereas Shodown was a game with huge characters and bright, vibrant colors, The Last Blade was a game with smaller (but better animated) sprites, a softer palette of colors, and characters that were sharply designed. You're not going to find anyone like Cham Cham in this game. Like Shodown, The Last Blade let you choose from two different modes: speed or power. Where the former let you bust out some truly impressive combos, the latter gave more power per hit. This game's atmosphere will certainly remind gamers of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
