If this film focused more on the general relationships of characters and how they interact within the plot, then it would have been a phenomenal and meaningful film. Instead, certain scenes are jarring and seem to force characters into behaving differently than expected, rather than growing naturally. If romance were cut from the film, Suzume would have grown more as a character, and the ending section's plot twist (no spoilers) would have been absolutely amazing. Instead, the story forces the main character to make decisions based on a forced love narrative that is crammed throughout the story. Imagine falling in love with someone after knowing each other for a few days, and then deciding that you need to rescue that person because you are madly in love. It just completely ruins the story. Aside from this, the story is quite interesting, but random changes in characters' behaviors, which go unexplained, make the story frustrating to follow. Of Makoto Shinkai's films, this one has least clear direction. If there were no forced romance or sudden, unexplained, character changes, then I would have rated the story an 8 or 9. I think the overall message is wonderful, and that ending section could have been spectacular. The Animation is the reason you're watching this show. If you wanna see me deepthroat MAPPA'S animation staff, ask me about one of their shows where all the other elements aren't hogshit. Additionally, even though there is good sakuga, the effects, lighting, artstyle, background, and overall artistic value of the show leave a lot to be desired. Story-wise is where this show should have a leg up on others, due to its unconventional first two episodes, but it completely squanders it immediately. First battle being overhyped slog? Check. Episode spent with introductions of characters nobody cares about or likes? Check. Meaningless, boring tournament arc spaced out by really dumb backstories? Check. This anime fell off the shounen drivel tree and hit every cliche on the way down, completely burying any sense of intrigue the premise had and showing no signs of promise to improving.
