Beware of Bootlegs Some NeoGeo AES games are rare and fetch upward of $1,000. As a result, unscrupulous individuals often take the MVS versions of these games and create counterfeit bootlegs that are playable in home consoles. Suffice it to say, the
sale of these bootlegs is illegal and intended solely to defraud SNK's loyal fans. How do you spot a bootleg? Often, the insert artwork or label is different from that in the official SNK release. Usually, though, the only way to check is to look inside the cartridge. The picture above is a legitimate SNK circuit board. If the game was converted from an MVS game using a sacrificial AES cartridge, you'll often find ugly solder points and wires going from chip to chip. Check the circuit board to see if the game title
imprinted isn't what appears onscreen. Many times, the entire circuit board is manufactured from scratch--a counterfeit all the way. If you don't see the SNK logo on the board or SNK logos on the chips, it's probably a counterfeit. Take a look at the ROM chips used.

In a fitting twist of fate, Ben Herman, VP of
sales for SNK Entertainment Inc. until the June 2000 pullout, was asked to come back and become the president of SNK NeoGeo USA Consumer Corporation. Herman had been working as a regional sales manager for Nintendo but found the opportunity to take the helm at his former employer too tempting to pass up. SNK is back. The King of Fighters 2000/2001 double pack is the first game to come to the US from SNK NeoGeo USA Consumer Corporation.
