Mashiba went outside with Ippo and
asked him if he really has no regrets about boxing, noting how he still wears the weight straps and continuing his roadwork, making him no different than when he was active. Ippo explained that he is so used to wearing weight straps that he can't stop wearing them, and that he only is doing roadwork to run with his students. Mashiba asked again if he has any regrets, and Ippo quickly replied he doesn't. Mashiba mentioned that it is fine if that is how he feels, but Miyata won't accept it, asking if he is really okay not fighting him. Mashiba added that Miyata, who was a top prospect is now just wandering like a zombie, and wondered if deep down Ippo has regrets, which is why neither one of them can move on. Ippo glared at Mashiba and claimed that they had countless chances to fight, which Mashiba thought that Ippo wanted to say that it is his fault. Mashiba claimed that he fouled against Miyata on purpose, so he was the one who got in the way of their promise. As Ippo remembered what happened, he got angry, but Mashiba apologised, shocking Ippo. Mashiba explained that all he could think about then was to become the
world champion for Kumi's sake. Mashiba felt as if Kumi is the one taking care of him, which he believed is backwards, so he wants her to have no regrets by showing her the world's best brother. Mashiba noted that to become world champion, he needed to focus, so he asked Ippo to continue to put up with Kumi until he has the world champion belt around his waist.
