To ensure its success in America they took a lot of influence from classic American cartoons when designing the game. While it firmly belongs to the JRPG genre (being a partial parody of it), the EarthBound (1994) series is also heavily influenced by 1950's sci-fi, American newspaper comics like Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes, and other Western media. The settings of the games range from small middle American towns (Onett, Twoson) to big bustling metropolises inspired by New York City (Fourside)—EarthBound is, after all, the Trope Namer for Eagleland.
