With its endearing characters, outstanding music, breathtaking artwork, superb voice acting, and clever humor, it stands out as a gem in the world of anime that should not be overlooked. Even if you are not particularly drawn to oriental themes, this anime possesses universal appeal that can be enjoyed by a wide-ranging audience. And let me emphasize once more, Kusuriya no Hitorigoto's main character is indeed somewhat cat-like (ΦωΦ).

It's not a bad anime, and it certainly started off interesting and cute. However, the story slowly got more confusing and less enjoyable. I think I was misled at the start to think that this was a cute slice-of-life where Maomao just enjoys her life doing apothecary stuff, but it has become more of a detective drama with Maomao as an apothecary ex machina solving all the palace mysteries.
Anyway, I'm just being harsh on the anime, because the real reason I dislike the show is because of one character - Jinshi.
I swear I've not seen . a more slimy, perverted, repulsive character as Jinshi - and yet he's portrayed as a handsome love interest (at least with Kazuma from Konosuba, he's a scumbag and everyone knows it).

Although she studies at Tristain Academy, a prestigious school for magicians, she has a major problem: Louise is unable to cast magic properly, earning her the nickname of "Louise the Zero" from her classmates. When the first year students are required to perform a summoning ritual, Louise's summoning results in a catastrophic explosion! Everyone deems this to be yet another failure, but when the smoke clears, a boy named Saito Hiraga appears. Now Louise's familiar, Saito is treated as a slave, forced to clean her clothes and eat off the ground. But when an unfamiliar brand is found etched on Saito's hand from the summoning ritual, it is believed to be the mark of a powerful familiar named Gandalfr.
The few exceptions are when Ayanokouji actually uses the points in an inventive manner to do things like purchase old test answers and boost the grade of a classmate's exam. Unfortunately, the point system wasn't nearly as explored as it should have been, and it failed to reach its full potential.
Remember when I said that the goal in this anime (at least from what I could discern) was for the core cast to strive to become the best in the school? While its true that class D (with the exception of Ayanokouji at first) desperately want to rise to the top, we rarely see anything significant done by them in order to achieve this goal. At one point Horikita gave a commanding speech in which she warned the other classes to look out for class D. From my perspective, this was just an empty threat. In fact, more often then not, the anime showcases the members of class D struggling to simply earn any points at all much less hoping to compete against their rivals. The anime constantly presented us with many "tough" scenarios that were supposed to leave viewers impressed with the protagonists for finding creative solutions to them. The problem is that many of these situations were too lackluster for me to even care about them in the first place. These mediocre events ranged from trying to have everyone in the class pass an exam without failing miserably to finding a panty thief. There are literally no stakes, and this was deleterious to the anime's success.
On a positive note, I did sort of like Ayanokouji and Horikita at first.
