The basic play
mechanics in KOF '94 were the same as in any other 2D fighting game, only now you could choose a team of three characters as
opposed to a single individual fighter. When one of your fighters was knocked out, the next in line would take his or her place. To win, you had to knock out all three fighters on the other team. It sure sounds like a simple twist on a trite formula, but the teamplay aspect had players flocking to King of Fighters '94 in droves. Year after year, SNK would continue to release new installments in the King of Fighters series like clockwork. The significance of King of Fighters '94 to the company's eventual bottom line and reputation is immeasurable. It didn't take long for Capcom to take notice of the teamplay mechanic pioneered in King of Fighters '94. By 1996, the rival company had paired up its X-Men license with the Street Fighter franchise to make X-Men vs. Street Fighter.
