That happened two times before Ippo realised how Mashiba's new stance works: he sticks out his front leg to create a "barrier" that makes it hard to push in, and with his upper body more squared up, his right will be closer to his opponent, making it reach longer. Ippo told Mashiba that his method for the world title match is amazing, which Mashiba countered with a left jab. Ippo began to block a barrage of punches while thinking of how Mashiba's already hard to dodge left is even harder now that he has to focus on Mashiba's right as well now because of the new stance. Ippo saw a right coming and guarded his body since it was an unguarded area, however, he got hit in the face, as Mashiba predicted he would lower his guard. Ippo and Mashiba's deciding dual exchange. After the three round spar ended, Ippo was glad they are both uninjured. Mashiba suggested that they continue sparring, but Ippo claimed that he is all beat up, and while he has some gas left in the tank, he is not an active boxer, so he doesn't have the mental stamina or focus to keep going. Mashiba told him he is fine since he said he still had some gas left Ippo thought of how he just came to the gym to be helpful, so he wished that Mashiba wouldn't use this situation just to harass him because he was visiting Kumi the other night. Ippo stomped his foot down and let Mashiba know he is ready to fight. As their second spar began, Ippo and Mashiba were fighting at close range when Mashiba knocked legs with Ippo. Ippo yelled at Mashiba for it, but Mashiba told him it wasn't on purpose. There’s this scrapbook uncanniness to some of the scenes while avoiding the scrunched-up outlines often seen on characters out of focus, adding to the many wallpaper-worthy shots appearing throughout.
At times the visual direction could be dull when not much was happening on screen, when it just hard cut between cast members starring into the screen trying to comprehend the tangle of plot with music missing, but it feels like that freedom of design is what Shingo Natsume saw with this entire series.
This might sound negative, and as far as personal investment in the choices made with the runtime that exists, it is, but I implore you to check out this show if you think its distinctiveness appeals to you. What I’ve been saying about how loose and overambitious the writing feels in light of the visual pizazz is something that only could’ve come from an anime original, a longtime animator writing a script for the first time with that rawness and passion radiating forward at the extent of understanding how to meet the audience halfway. That freedom is worth cherishing. I’m grateful that shows like Sonny Boy are allowed to exist. I appreciate the light hints that the show leaves for people to ponder well after an episode ends. But in its current state, I believe the looseness of its execution precludes me from coming out as infactuated as Natsume wants me to be. Reviewer’s Rating: 6 What did you think of this review? The story its a lot of no sense points, characters that appear or disappear without explanation and hypothesis that guides to nothing, but who cares? That is the goal of this pretentious show. All is justified because of GOD.
