"Tokyo Revengers" is the first anime I watched about gangs, so I don't know how reliable my opinion is at this level, since I don't have any comparison standards. Overall, I enjoyed the first season a lot: engaging plot, cool characters, good fight scenes, etc. , and it was very interesting to me, because I'd never seen animes regarding these themes, so it felt like a whole new thing for me, thus it made it very exciting.

[95] In celebration of the anime's 10th anniversary, the song "Sо̄kyū no Fanfare" (蒼穹のファンファーレ) was used as the theme song for the commemorative event "Sword Art Online: Full Dive", held on November 6, 2022. The song was composed by Yuki Kajiura and performed by ReoNa, ASCA and Eir Aoi, who were in charge of previous opening and ending themes for the series. [96] Theatrical films[edit] An animated film titled Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale, featuring an original story by Kawahara set after the events of Sword Art Online II, premiered in Japan and Southeast Asia on February 18, 2017, and was released in the United States on March 9, 2017. [97][98][99][100] After the finale of Sword Art Online: Alicization - War of Underworld, an anime adaptation of Sword Art Online: Progressive was announced. [101] It was later revealed to be a new film titled Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, which premiered on October 30, 2021. [102] Inori Minase is joining the cast as the new character Mito. [103] Ayako Kōno is directing the film, with Kento Toya designing the characters, Yuki Kajiura returning to compose the music, and A-1 Pictures returning for production. [104] After the premiere of Sword Art Online Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, a sequel film titled Sword Art Online Progressive: Scherzo of Deep Night was announced. [105] The film was scheduled for September 10, 2022, but was later delayed due to production issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. [106][107] It is premiered on October 22, 2022. [108] During the commemorative event "Sword Art Online: Full Dive", a new film project was announced.

The production quality: Look, Project No. 9 is a pretty decent mid-sized studio with distinct visuals. However, this season they decided to put out three full shows at the same time. A Girl and Her Guard Dog was definitely the one they sacrificed whenever they needed time for the other two. There's plain bad art, choppy animation, faulty frames, continuity errors, mismatch with audio, style dissonance within a scene, lazy backgrounds, weirdly paced scenes, recycled animation, extended flashbacks (from previous episodes) and probably more. The direction itself and the pacing of the season as a whole were rather good, if you do care about the story. The voice acting and BGM were of standard quality, some pieces even stand out for being particularly effective.
This is purely speculation, but seeing how the vast majority of the recent works from the studio have a male demo, this was a change of pace that was forced into them, and they didn't spend any extra bit of effort in the show besides what was needed so the episode aired.
The OST: I live for Masayoshi Ooishi and the OP didn't disappoint. The ED is good too. They don't count towards the rating so moving on. ^ Hodgkins, Crystalyn (November 29, 2020). [143] The OVA, "Memory Snow," released in 2018, sold a total of 10,429 Blu-ray and DVD copies. [144][145] Theron Martin of Anime News Network reviewed the first book, praising it for being a somewhat fresher take on the "transported to another world" concept, but leveled criticism at it for bumpy and awkwardly timed dialogue and a tendency for redundancy. [146] The series ranked first in a poll of 820 people conducted by the Japanese website Anime! Anime!, to determine the best show of spring 2016. [147] Andy Hanley from UK Anime Network considered the anime adaptation as one of 2016's best series. [148] The Managing Editor from Anime Now!, Richard Eisenbeis lists the anime as one of his top picks from 2016 for its "culturally complex" world and characters that have "their own plans, faults, and motivations. " He praised Subaru as the "most complex character of the year" due to provoking the audience to "cheer him and despise him" in a world that portrayed him as the "least special person in it. "[149] The series took second place in the 2015–2016 Newtype Anime Awards. Additionally, director Masaharu Watanabe took first place, as did Subaru, Rem, and Puck (in the best male, female, and mascot character categories, respectively). Masahiro Yokotani's screenplay took second place, while the series' character designs (by Shin'ichirō Ōtsuka and Kyuta Sakai) took third place. The series' soundtrack and second opening theme both took fourth place in their categories. [150] The light novels and the anime both took first place in their respective categories in the 2017 Sugoi Japan Awards.
