Using his newfound power, Lelouch attempts to overthrow the Britannian empire and create a world where his sister Nunally can live peacefully. I often see people compare the plot to Death Note, and I can kind of see the comparison since both series are about genius high school students who were given supernatural powers and live double lives, with the intent of “making the world a better place” according to their own ideals of justice. But despite these comparisons, they both feel drastically different from one another. Both are completely different genres; Death Note is more of a psychological crime thriller, whereas Code Geass has more political themes as well as mecha battles. But that’s enough about Death Note, for now, we can talk about that anime another day.
Code Geass is full of awesome mech fights that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat, but they aren’t even the main focus of the show! Half of the runtime is spent getting to know Lelouch as a character, as well as his motives for his rebellion.

The character designs were done by CLAMP, who put a lot of details into the eyes, which makes sense considering how Lelouch’s Geass works. The characters are all made to be really tall and thin, which I hated at first, but now I don’t mind it so much. The mech designs look really cool too. The animation is done by Sunrise, who also did the animation for the Gundam series, which checks out because the fight scenes are animated super well! Some fight scenes had me on the edge of my seat just from how well-animated they were.
The background music of the show is kind of forgettable, but there were some tracks that I liked and felt fit the show well. Namely the opera songs, like All Hail Britannia, fit the tone of the anime so well. The openings are really good too and don’t seem to miss. The first opening may be one of my favourite anime openings of all time: Colors by Flow. Flow just doesn’t seem to miss when it comes to music! They made a couple of Naruto openings, as well as one of the best anime insert songs ever made: Hero Kibou No Uta from Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods, but I’m getting sidetracked again. The visuals of the opening are good too, and they even change with every episode to match the events. The second opening reuses visuals from the first one, but the song is a bop so I don’t mind it all too much. Anime News Network. January 10, 2017. Archived from the original on March 25, 2017.
