The story is a reimagining of The Drifting Classroom, only now, some of the students lost in limbo have thematically relevant superpowers. People all over the anime community have given this show a reputation for being abstruse, or “2deep4u” as the saying goes, but I could not disagree more, and in fact, I actually think the show almost suffers from being too simplistic. Sonny Boy is a metaphor for entering the Japanese school and work system, and the emotional issues of these characters stem from their middle . school graduation. It’s hard to see beyond what’s here at school; some of your friends are developing amazing talents and maybe you’re not; you have to take a leap of faith out into the real world; nothing comes for free, you have to stand up and work for it.

It can't stand on its own as a single season without that second part. The entire show is unwatchable because of how it was structured. Unless you're watching it for the above average art and animation, there's no point in seeing this until they release the rest because the only interesting part of the show is the mystery, which is built up through the whole season and never resolved.
Of course, if it had good characters and individual stories it would still hold up. Unfortunately neither are quite the case. The creators were good at writing a mystery, not so much interesting characters. None had complex personalities. The only real character trait an important character had was the main boy who's trait is that he is horny. Main girl, heaven girl etc. , are all completely forgetable but for their designs (the designs clearly came before the characters). The side quests are really forgettable as well, all just exploring very basic and surface level themes. Tomo Yasaka (八坂 智, Yasaka Tomo) Voiced by: Yūsuke Kobayashi[5] One of Kaede's closest friends. Kaede is regularly caught staring at Ai by him. Asuka Kawato (川戸 あすか, Kawato Asuka) Voiced by: Aya Uchida[5] One of Ai's closest friends who is often seen going with her. She has a crush on Ren, even though he doesn't reciprocate at all. Yuika Hibuchi (火渕 結衣花, Hibuchi Yuika) Voiced by: Saki Miyashita[5] Kaede and Ai's classmate. She also has bad eyesight. On one occasion, she helps Ai with wearing contact lens in the sports festival. Tokita (時田) Voiced by: Kentarō Tone[5] Kaede and Ai's classmate. He wears a pair of glasses and has a chubby appearance. It's implied he may have a secret crush on Ai as well, but it's never made clear. Ise (伊勢) A former classmate of Ai.
