The next day, he asked Ada why she picked Kawaki over him. Daemon
teased him about it, and Ada revealed it was because of his age. When Kawaki deduced that Ada sold Boruto out to Code so she
could have Kawaki, Boruto complained about his
situation when Kawaki and Daemon argued. After Ada asked for Sarada and Sumire to join them, wishing to talk to girls, Boruto watched them from afar, and later defeated Daemon in a video game. He heard Momoshiki's thoughts, having identified Ada's entrancing ability, but was frustrated when Momoshiki refused to share details. Kawaki noticed his expression, and realising he was talking to Momoshiki, addressed Momoshiki himself, telling him to come out. Boruto tried to play it down, but Kawaki was determined. When Shikamaru convinced Kawaki to stop it, he left, and Boruto followed him, losing track of Kawaki when he shrank himself. Boruto could still sense his presence, but couldn't pinpoint his location, so Shikamaru had him accompany Ada, who wanted to go out. He felt out of place while Ada and the girls shopped, and was teased by Daemon. When Daemon rushed out, intrigued by an intensity he felt from Himawari, Boruto explained she wasn't even a shinobi, and disapproved when he thought that Daemon had a crush on her.

International Children's Film Festival Animation Jury Award Won Rights of the Child Award Won Derivative works[edit] Planned follow-up[edit] Following the success of Grave of the Fireflies, Takahata drew up an outline for a follow-up film, based on similar themes but set in 1939 at the start of the second World War. This film was called Border 1939, based on the novel The Border by Shin Shikata, and would have told the story of a Japanese teenager from colonial Seoul joining an anti-Japanese resistance group in Mongolia. The film was intended as an indictment of Japanese imperialist sentiment, which is briefly touched upon in Grave of the Fireflies. Although Takahata finished a full outline (which is republished in his book Thoughts While Making Movies), the film was canceled before production could start due to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Public opinion in Japan had turned against China, and Ghibli's distributor felt a film partly set there was too risky.
