These shows typically depict two people falling in love; it starts with a crush and the audience watches it blossom from there. Good romance anime highlights all kinds of relationships, from schoolyard crushes and first kisses to crossdressing anime about adults developing a relationship at work. They also feature some of the sexiest anime characters and anime girls ever created. Sometimes referred to as love anime, these shows can be a little more slow-paced than your typical shoujo anime, but that isn't to say they're boring. In fact some of the best romance anime isn't strictly about love, but rather a combination of multiple genres. In the hit series Inuyasha, the love between Inuyasha and Kagome is strong throughout the series, but it takes a back seat to the fighting and action scenes that really drive the show. The same goes for the popular Eureka 7, where Renton and Eureka fall in love while piloting mechs and fighting the evil United Federation. Tengoku Daimakyo takes this theme, but has a sci-fi mystery backdrop to it, making it quite a unique experience, and one I haven’t really experienced personally.
What do we want from a sci-fi mystery show? Do we want twists and turns, dark reveals, or unpredictability? Tengoku Daimakyo has all of that, but it also has the one narrative technique I . appreciate the most in media, which is “show, don’t tell”. This anime masterfully handles that by giving us virtually no real direction on the surface, but encourages the viewer to ponder on the events of each episode, pay attention to how the characters act, and recall past events to make a scene or reveal hit that much harder. It’s an anime that can generate a lot of discourse because it is just so mind-bending at times, and confusing, in the most wonderful of ways. It’s not exactly “unpredictable” either, but in order to get the full picture, some thinking must be done — I really appreciate that, as it makes for another level of engagement to the events of the anime. In many media, it’s the author who seems to be the one dumping the information, but in this show, it’s instead the viewers who might try to put two and two together, like a puzzle, to figure out what exactly is going on in the story. There’s no better feeling than when you put two and two together and find out your theory was indeed correct.
For pretty heavy spoiler reasons, these should be watched after the mainline series even though they are (mostly) separate versions of the same story and stand alone as their own adventures. Here’s the order – making particular note that, again, you should watch 1. 11 instead of 1. 0, 2. 22 instead of 2. 0, and so on.
