This was a handheld fighting game based on the NeoGeo version of King of Fighters '97. Since the NGP was a monochrome system, R-1 used black-and-white graphics. When SNK added color to King of Fighters for the NeoGeo Pocket Color, it also updated the game to include characters and events from the NeoGeo version of King of Fighters '98. The TFT LCD screen removed the blur that was evident in R-1, and the addition of color added depth to the characters and backgrounds. It also featured a Dreamcast link, so you could connect an NGPC to a DC using a special cable and exchange skills with King of Fighters '99.
