It was serialized in Shueisha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1985 to 1990, with its chapters collected in 28 tankōbon volumes. The story follows five mystical warriors called the Saints who fight wearing sacred sets of armor named "Cloths", the designs of which derive from the various constellations the characters have adopted as their destined guardian symbols. The Saints have sworn to defend the reincarnation of the Olympian goddess Athena (in her fictional depiction specific to the series) in her battle against other gods who want to dominate Earth.

When Ippo saw the lightweight champion, Katsutaka Imae claim he would "crush the frog" in a headline on a newspaper, he noted how similar it was to how Shimabukuro wanted to destroy the Dempsey Roll in a headline. Thinking that Aoki may not be able to use his Frog Punch, Ippo and his other gym mates try to help Aoki learn a technique he can mix with the Frog Punch, however, they stopped when Aoki ran away as he thought he was being made fun of. After the weigh-in for Itagaki and Aoki, Ippo went with Kimura and Itagaki outside the Kōrakuen Hall where they notice Imae and his girlfriend talking. They then witness Imae being rude to her, resulting in her crying and running away. The next day, Ippo watched Itagaki's first match of his East Japan Rookie King Tournament, which ended in Itagaki's victory. Ippo then watched Aoki's title match against Imae. Ippo, like the rest of the audience, was tricked by Aoki's Look Away, but Ippo was in a higher seating area and saw him use the Frog Punch after doing the Look Away. The match ended after the ten round were over and the decision resulted in a draw, making Imae keep the belt and Aoki losing. After the match, Takamura made rude remarks about the match. Ippo, Itagaki, and Kimura had Takamura go to Aoki's house to apologise, as they believe it would be his fault if he retires. When they got there, they overheard Aoki and Tomiko talking about how he would become champion the next time he tries.

Hanamichi was reluctant to join the team at first as he had no previous sports background (and because the fiftieth girl rejected him for a basketball player), but despite his immaturity and hot temper, he proves to be a natural athlete with potential, initially joining the team in order to impress Haruko, but later coming to love the sport and working his best to help the team win the nationals.

However, Boruto remained in control over his body, something he attributed to Amado's medicine. He began pressuring Code, who considered him a high quality sacrifice for the growth of a God Tree. As he decided to go all out against Code, Boruto's body suddenly gave out, and he collapsed in pain. Boruto impaled by Kawaki. Momoshiki's soul appeared for him as time stopped, and mocked him for thinking Amado's drugs would stop the Kāma from extracting. He took control over Boruto's body, and continued fighting Code, as well as Naruto and Shikamaru when they arrived. He attempted to kill Naruto, but was surprised to see Kawaki absorbing his attack with a new Kāma. Using Isshiki's jutsu, Kawaki fought Momoshiki with the intent to kill him, even if it also killed Boruto. Reawakening, Boruto agreed with Kawaki's assessment, and pushed his father out of the way, allowing Kawaki to strike him through his chest. Code retreated after struggling to defeat Kawaki. Boruto woke up healed, to Naruto and Shikamaru's shock.
