Carol's mother, Ferris, seems almost as airheaded as her daughter, but has suspicions about Misuzu's motives. Carol
easily beats both Tomo and Misuzu at Othello. With midterm exams coming up, Misuzu invites Tomo and Carol to come to her house to study. The other girls meet Misuzu's mother, Misaki, who bares a strong resemblance to her daughter. Likewise, Misaki confuses Tomo for her mother Akemi at first. The three study for the exams, with Tomo understanding Carol's odd explanations better than Misuzu's methods. After the exams, Tomo and Junichiro show
small improvements in their scores, with Carol mocking Misuzu for
finishing second, as she got the highest score. Junichiro invites Tomo to his house to
play video games. Tomo later realizes the implication of going to Junichiro's house overnight by herself, but Misuzu, Carol, and her parents all encourage her to go anyway. Tomo struggles to reconcile her new feelings for Junichiro with their established friendship throughout the night, but the next day at school, feels that they grew closer together. 6"Birthday Present"

From a production standpoint, the show looks fine, but disappointing by MAPPA’s standards. Some of the fight scenes were genuinely very decent and tense, but the other moments of the show had this very weird filter where the characters didn’t really “fit in” with the background art. The compositing was awful at some points, and characters went off model a lot. It was clearly the product of rushed production, as most episodes were outsourced to between ten and twenty different anime studios and animation directors, which signalled how poor the production schedule was. It more or less just felt like MAPPA gathering up all their buddies to finish their homework just as the teacher was coming to collect it every week. This might feel a bit harsh and nitpicky, but if we’re comparing it to other MAPPA works, this is probably one of their worst productions, but from a wider perspective outside of MAPPA, the show looks average to fine visually.
Overall, there is decent entertainment value to be seen here, but it could have been so much better with more time spent on production, and more showing instead of telling. This will undoubtedly get more seasons, so I just hope the next time this show comes around, it’ll be a much improved product compared to what we got this time around. MAPPA, you just got to chill with the amount of
projects you got. Reviewer’s Rating: 5 What did you think of this review? What I had heard from Jigokuraku before
made me afraid, after all, I hear it being compared to Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man which is an immediate red flag, but I know some people recommend some series over the most superficial reasons, so maybe, this one won’t be actually that similar to those, maybe this one will be good right? Well, the answer is sadly no, I cannot even say I’m disappointed because I’m not, it turned out to be exactly .
All of the main characters who have abilities are defined by simply having a different hair color from one another, and that's it. Aomine is a poorly written-character as well. He was growing tired of competing since he was better than everyone else around him, so why didn't he just
move on and play against bigger competetion? This happens all the time in real life, where younger people play up. It was Aomines choice to play against worse competetion, so why does he still play in the lower leagues? I found myself not caring about a single character because nobody is playing for anything meaningful. The main 2 characters are trying to get attention for how lucky they were for being born with basketball abilities; Kise doesn't even like basketball and also just
wants to be cool like Aomine. Aomine thinks he is better than everyone and also doesn't want to play the sport, and we don't even know what Midorima is playing for.
