Now merely a maid, Maomao settles into her new mundane life and hides her extensive knowledge of medicine in order to avoid any unwanted attention.
Not long after Maomao's arrival, the emperor's infant children inexplicably begin to experience grave symptoms—almost as if a curse has been cast. The curious Maomao easily solves the mystery and, to remain out of the limelight, attempts to leave an anonymous tip. Unfortunately, the dashing and perceptive eunuch Jinshi sees through it and manages to single her out.
In recognition of her talent, Maomao is promoted to lady-in-waiting for the emperor's favorite concubine, Gyokuyou. As Maomao continues to remedy the numerous ailments afflicting the imperial court, her pharmaceutical expertise quickly proves indispensable.

[63] Anime[edit] Critical reception[edit] My Dress-Up Darling received widespread critical acclaim for its animation, voice acting, characters, humor and translation. Reviewing the anime's first season, IGN's Kambole Campbell described the show as a "supremely enjoyable portrayal of the joy of sharing a craft. " The review praised the performances as "genuine as they are entertaining. "[64] Slashfilm's Rafael Motamayor writes that the show is "not technical enough to turn the audience or the characters off, but enough that you can appreciate the very hard work that goes into cosplaying. " He also praised the show's English translation as "go[ing] the extra mile to portray [Marin's] personality through the subtitles, capturing her gyaru idioms and even random gibberish that she says out loud. "[65] Collider's David Lynn praised Gojo and Marin, the show's two main characters, as "simultaneously broadly universal and yet surprisingly complex" with "distinct strengths and flaws". [66] The show did receive criticism by some for its fan service and oversexualization of characters. IGN's Campbell writes that "There are a handful of leery moments that'll take some viewers out of it. "[64] Writing for Bleeding Cool, Alejandra Bodden generally praised the show's exploration of sexuality but criticized some scenes as uncomfortable.
