That's not to say there aren't any problems, however the flaws with the characters stem mainly from a difference in goals and perspective rather than any real lack of talent.
In all honesty, it's difficult to decide which version is actually better as the differences in plot,
theme and character development make this version and Arakawa's two very different tales. That said, there will be those who fall on one side or the other, some preferring the darker nature of the first adaptation
while others like the more direct approach of the manga and Brotherhood. Personally, I found both versions to be very good, especially as the route that Arakawa's tale takes bears almost no resemblance to this one. While there are some broad similarities between the two in terms of locale, characters and basic plot, in actuality these are only skin deep, as the original adaptation of Full Metal Alchemist deviates quite a lot from the typical shounen sensibilities come the end of the series. The obsessive theme of the first adaptation is a far cry from what one is given in the manga and Brotherhood.
[74] In the United Kingdom, the series is distributed by Anime Limited,[75][76] who released the first part of the first season on DVD on June 25, 2018[77] and the
second part on May 20, 2019. [78] Anime Limited later released both parts on Blu-ray on August 19, 2019,[79][80] with a complete collection being released on February 15, 2021. [81] Both Funimation and Anime Limited's Season 1 Part 1 Blu-ray releases received negative attention after it was discovered that they showed visible color banding and compression artifacts. [82] Madman Anime released the first part of the first season in Australia on Blu-ray on May 8, 2019. [83] On March 23, 2019, it was announced that a second season was in production. [84] The cast and staff would reprise their roles for the second season. [85] It was scheduled to premiere in April 2020, but was delayed to July 2020 due to production complications caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. [86] Before the arrival of the second season's initial premier date, an edited version of the first season premiered on January 1, 2020, on AT-X and other channels, with the edited version
recapping the first season through one-hour episodes. It also included new additional footage. [87] The OVA "Memory Snow" was also broadcast in between the episodes 5 and 6 of the edited version. The second season was announced to be in a split-cour format, with the first half airing from July 8 to September 30, 2020, and the second half airing from January 6 to March 24, 2021.
