Production[edit] One began the original webcomic of One-Punch Man in 2009. [5][6] The Japanese shortened name Wanpanman is a play on the long-running children's character Anpanman,[7] wanpan being a contraction of wanpanchi ("one punch"). [8] One became interested in creating a comic superhero who was already the strongest in the world. [6][9] He wanted to focus on different aspects of storytelling than those normally relied on in standard superhero stories, such as everyday problems. One said: "Punching is oftentimes pretty useless against life's problems. But inside One-Punch Man's universe, I made Saitama a sort of guy who was capable of adapting his life to the world that surrounded him, only armed with his immense power.

When he was only barely a year old, he was almost run over by a rushing bus while playing with a football. However, Tsubasa had held the ball in front of him which served as a cushion for most of the impact. The force of the bump blew him away, but he was able to right himself over again with the ball. Hence, Tsubasa Ozora's motto of "The ball is my friend". Ever since he was little, he always went out with a football. His mother now having concluded that he was indeed born only to play football. At a very young age, Tsubasa Ozora already has amazing speed, stamina, dribbling skills and shotpower, astounding anyone who sees him play. Shoya starts to ignore those around him (imagining them with a large blue X across their face). Upon meeting her in high school, he eventually apologizes to Shoko, becoming fluent in sign language specifically to do so, and begins to spend time with her. Shoya feels like he has not been punished enough for bullying Shoko and often wishes he could have stopped his younger self. He also feels resigned to the fact that he will never be able to have friends again. As the series progresses, Shoya and Shoko reconnect with their former classmates, in the process making amends with them and facing the lingering effects from each other's past. Shoko Nishimiya (西宮 硝子, Nishimiya Shōko) The other main character, Shoko, is a deaf girl who is bullied by Shoya in elementary school to the point of needing to transfer.
