What a film needs to do in order to make its audience care about its characters by the final moments, is to make compelling cases as to why we need to care about them. Giving them perverted, shy, quirky, and thought-provoking characteristics all added up to two loveable on-screen animated characters that I found myself tearing up with by the final moments of Your Name. The meaning of the title gives even more depth to these two, shall I say star-crossed lovers? I can't elaborate on that without spoiling the finale, but lets just say you need to be wide awake to fully appreciate what this film goes for in the end. Overall, Your Name is a picture perfect representation of the best version a story like this can possibly be. With a pulse-pounding and endearing score all at once, this is a film that sucks you in and holds your attention, regardless if its moving fast or slow. The biggest flaw this film would have suffered from would have been a weak conclusion to a film that is otherwise filled with eons of questions.

Anime renewals are largely dependent on the availability of source material apart from popularity. Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Japanese manga series has 12 Tankouban volumes already in circulation with the 13th one releasing in the first week of January 2023. The first installment of the show only covers the first five of these volumes, so there is more than enough content for another season. The release of the show also positively impacted manga sales and it was regularly featured in the Oricon Top 20 list in October, November, and December 2022. This just goes on to prove that the dark fantasy series is immensely popular among manga and anime fans, so its renewal is almost guaranteed in the upcoming months and there is a good chance that it will be announced Chainsaw Man exhibition which is scheduled for February 2023. But it should be noted that there is a good chance that the Bomb Devil arc may get adapted as a movie first while the second season covers the International Assassins arc, Gun Devil arc, and Control Devil arc- effectively bringing the Part 1 or the Public Safety saga to an end.

That said, there will be those who fall on one side or the other, some preferring the darker nature of the first adaptation while others like the more direct approach of the manga and Brotherhood. Personally, I found both versions to be very good, especially as the route that Arakawa's tale takes bears almost no resemblance to this one. While there are some broad similarities between the two in terms of locale, characters and basic plot, in actuality these are only skin deep, as the original adaptation of Full Metal Alchemist deviates quite a lot from the typical shounen sensibilities come the end of the series. The obsessive theme of the first adaptation is a far cry from what one is given in the manga and Brotherhood.
Regardless of which version one prefers though, the simple fact is that we, as anime fans, have been given two great takes on the story, and we should count ourselves lucky to have such a wealth as all too often we must suffer through mediocrity and crap just find some entertainment.
